How to Check If Your Website Is Loading Slowly (And What to Do About It)
A practical guide to diagnosing slow website loading — from quick checks you can do yourself to understanding what your developer needs to investigate.
You visit your own website and it takes a few seconds to load. Or you hear from a customer that "your site was slow yesterday." What do you do next?
Diagnosing a slow website does not require technical expertise. You can narrow down the cause with a few simple checks — then pass the right information to your developer.
Quick checks you can do right now
Check on a real mobile device
Open your website on a phone using mobile data (not Wi-Fi). This is how most of your visitors experience your site. If it loads noticeably slower than on Wi-Fi, your pages may be too heavy for mobile connections.
What to look for: Does the main content appear within 2-3 seconds? Does anything jump around while loading? Do buttons respond immediately when tapped?
Test from a different location
If your website is hosted in the UK and you are testing from the UK, a visitor from another country may have a very different experience. Use a free tool like Pingdom or GTmetrix and select a test location that matches your audience.
What to look for: If load times double or triple from a different region, your hosting location may need reconsideration.
Compare with competitors
Visit your main competitor's website on the same device and connection. If theirs loads noticeably faster, your visitors may be having the same comparison — and choosing them over you.
What the numbers mean
If you run a speed test (PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, or Pingdom), you will see various metrics. Here is what to focus on as a non-technical website owner:
